Who discovers rust on his grill grate is understandably angry. Such a thing can spoil the best planned barbecue evening. But what can you do about the annoying grate? Can it be easily removed or how can rust be prevented?
First of all, it is important to keep calm and determine whether it is rust film or whether it is really rust that is blooming on your grill. Some impurities also look like rust.
Here it is helpful to know which material the grill is made of. If it is made of stainless steel, no grate should be possible. Otherwise, complain the grill to the manufacturer or the retailer where you purchased it.
If, however, you have a grill grate made of conventional steel or cast iron, then it is quite possible. Chrome-plated models should not have any rust, unless the chrome has flaked off at one point.
If you are dealing with real rust spots and the grille is really rusted, then you should dispose of the grille. Because it is not only unappetizing to put the meat on the rusty places, it is also not healthy to eat this grill.
Remove rust film
But how do you now check whether it is rust film? It should be said that rust can form with too much moisture and in combination with detergent. As this rust is only superficial, it can easily be burnt out and brushed off. Heat the grill for this purpose. Leave the grill in the heat until it has become very hot. Do not place any food on the grill. After some time brush the grill off with a suitable brush. The grill grate should shine in its old glory again.
Another method of cleaning is the following: Place the grill over night in the meadow. The moisture loosens and loosens both the dirt and rust. The next day you can clean the grill with a brush and then heat it up on the grill.
Rust spots on cast iron
If your grill is made of cast iron and rusty stains appear, proceed as follows: Brush off the grate with a grill brush or use a steel sponge. Oil the affected area well with cooking oil and burn the grill again over high heat.
Avoid cleaning the cast iron with washing-up liquid and water, as rust can quickly build up again.
Nevertheless, the cast iron grate has some advantages, such as the heat storage capacity and the familiar grill pattern in the meat.
Stainless steel grill grate
If you want to make sure that you don’t have any problems with rust, you should buy a stainless steel grill. But still pay attention to the quality and do not save in the wrong place. Because nothing stands in the way of the grill pleasure without rust at the grill grate.
